The mascots were revealed in a ceremony at Shougang Ice Hockey Arena at the capital.
Beijing mayor Chen Jining explained them as cute, unique and exquisite.
“At a visually appealing way, they epitomise that our aspiration to the Beijing 2022 Games, also extend our warm invitation to friends around the world,” he said.
The panda, called Bing Dwen Dwen, is your Olympic mascot. Colourful circles about its surface symbolise 5G technology and skating paths, according to the web site of the Beijing construction committee.
The word for ice, bing , shows strength and purity, while Dwen Dwen means sincerity, liveliness and health, the website said.
The selection of a pandawas not a surprise for people in China. Some weren’t impressed with the lack of imagination in selecting a panda As many famous Bing Dwen Dwen because of its cuteness on interpersonal media.
The giant panda has been the emblem for the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990, and was among the five mascots for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
“Today is an important step on a landmark in Beijing’s journey to make history as the very first ever, in Olympic history, to host both summer and winter versions of the Olympic Games,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said at the service.
According to a traditional lantern, Paralympic mascot Shuey Rhon Rhon generates the merry feeling the organising committee said.
It matches a group of yellow doves round its head, a yellow ribbon along with a traditional Chinese paper cutting edge.
Shuey means snow in Chinese and the characters for Rhon Rhon mean inclusiveness and integration, implying world civilisations living and communicating in harmony, ” the committee stated.
The two mascots were selected from more than 5,800 submissions from 35 countries.
