Martin Tyler speaks Sky Sports through his very first and finest commentary moments with England.
The England match that I commentated on, I’ll never forget. It was a fantastic honour to be chosen, I worked in the time for ITV, in 1982.
They had selected me to do the World Cup finals that summer. I pointed out once I had been chosen that I’d never achieved an England match, and I was given a match in the build-up away to Wales in the old Cardiff City Stadium, Ninian Park. England won 1-0 with Trevor Francis.
It was a wonderful sense, in a peculiar way along with it would be felt by other commentators also, when you get picked to commentate on England it’s a bit like getting chosen to play as an individual player for England.
And here we are it’s been over 300 since then, and every one’s a joy.
I guess the game was the’66 closing. I wasn’t there, I felt patriotic and stood behind the goal, moved into a group game against France, watched the final at home and only stayed in front of the TV.
They showed the parties in the day, I don’t think I proceeded for approximately seven or eight hours. From my commentary career, there’s so many to choose from but one that stands out to get Sky Sports was the David Beckham goal against Greece.
It was a strange feeling because he’d had a couple of free-kicks, and that believed he got . The words I picked as he lined up it revealed , and boy did he deliver – not just too.
(Discussing before Tuesday’s match against Kosovo). The match against Bulgaria has been the most recent in what Gareth Southgate expects will be qualification. They didn’t offer to change the speed of this game which was assault against greed.
There was that moment at the onset of the second half in which Wanderson didn’t score and England went up the other end and won a punishment, and from there we were going to win the game. The one real positive for me personally was that the front three, although it is tough to draw certain conclusions.
We’ve been talking in Liverpool and Arsenal having an exciting way of playing in which the midfield does not need to become super-creative about three, and perhaps England are a little short in that section. However, when you’ve got players such as Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling along with Marcus Rashford – Jadon Sancho effective at pushing them in addition to other people – I think it’s a good thing to do.
