Ace two-year-old Pinatubo extended his perfect career record to six wins from six with success in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
Trained by Charlie Appleby and commissioned by William Buick, the odds-on favourite (1/3) was scoring for the second time in the highest level following a months Group One demolition job at the Vincent OBrien National Stakes at the Curragh.
Having his initial encounter on Newmarkets famous Rowley Mile, the son of Shamardal was less impressive on this occasion but showed a fantastic attitude when forced to dig deep by Aidan OBriens Arizona (14/1), who had been only third in the Curragh but chose to within 2 spans with this occasion.
Third went to the supposed OBrien first-string Wichita (7/2) who had a very clear shot in front two around the stands rail under Ryan Moore.
Appleby said on ITV Conclusion:I am relieved, we could all try and be calm and composed beforehand but once you get a horse like that… we have seen it with Permit final week, and it clearly means a lot to the general public.
Happily this horse has gone and done it kept the dream alive for winter
