Sergio Garcia made a bogey-free beginning to the KLM Open for within two shots of their lead in Amsterdam.
The Masters champion published four birdies in a blemish-free 68 in The International to sit in the group four under and two strokes straight from first-round leader Callum Shinkwin.
Garcia, trying to join with the likes of Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal as champions of the event, began on the back nine opened .
Even the 15-time European Tour winner wrapped at a 15-footer at the eighth to close the gap on Shinkwin, who birdied two of his final three holes and holed a 30-footer in the par-four initially to place a six-under 66 and top the leaderboard.
“Requirements got a little bit trickier within the previous seven or six holes, so that I was quite happy with this,” Garcia said. “I’ll keep working hard like I’ve been doing and hopefully I will have a chance this weekend.”
126th in the Rush to Dubai, shinkwin, reached the turn in 32 courtesy of a eagle, three birdies and one dropped shot before posting two birdies on a reunite to grab top spot.
English trio Chris Paisley, Sam Horsfield and Matthew Southgate sit off the pace on five under along with Scotland’s Marc Warren, Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard and Malaysia’s Gavin Green, with one time leader James Morrison in the team two off the rate with Garcia.
Defending champion Wu Ashun is under alongside house favourite Joost Luiten, that recovered by being three-over-par in the turn while Patrick Reed posted a 72.
