Martin Tyler talks Sky Sports throughout his best and very first commentary moments with England.
The very first England game that I commentated on, I’ll never forget. It was a wonderful honor to be chosen, I was working for ITV in the time, in 1982.
They had selected me to perform the World Cup finals that summer in Spain. I pointed out when I was chosen that I’d never done an England match, and I was provided a match in the build-up away to Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, Ninian Park. England won 1-0 with Trevor Francis.
It was a feeling, in a peculiar manner when you have picked to commentate on England along with it would be felt by other commentators as well it is somewhat like getting chose to play as a participant.
And here we are it’s been around 300 since , and every one’s a pleasure.
I suppose the best match was the’66 final. I was not there, I felt very patriotic and stood behind the target, went to a group game, watched the final and stayed in the front of this TV.
They showed all the parties in the day, I do not believe I moved for about seven or eight hours. There’s so many to choose from but one that stands out to get Sky Sports was the David Beckham target against Greece.
It was a strange feeling since he had had a couple of free-kicks, and I believed that he got . The words since he lined it up I picked reflected that, and boy did he send – not just for me personally but the country too.
