Martin Tyler talks Sky Sports throughout his very first and best commentary minutes with England.
The very first England match I commentated on, I’ll never forget. It was a fantastic honor to be picked, I was working at the moment for ITV, in 1982.
They’d chosen me to do the World Cup finals that summer. Once I was chosen that I’d never done an England match I pointed out, and I had been given a game in the build-up away to Wales at the old Cardiff City Stadium. England won 1-0 with Trevor Francis.
It was a sense, in a strange manner along with it would be felt by other commentators when you get picked to commentate on England it’s somewhat like getting chose to play as an individual player for England.
And now here we are – it’s been around 300 since then, and every one’s a joy.
I figure the ideal match was the’66 final. I wasn’t there, I felt very patriotic and stood behind the target, moved into a group game against France, watched the final and stayed in front of the TV.
They showed the celebrations in the evening, I do not think I moved for approximately seven or eight hours. From my opinion career, there’s so many to pick from but was the David Beckham goal against Greece.
Because he had had a few free-kicks it was a peculiar feeling, and I felt that he got . The words I chose as he lined it up reflected that, and boy did he ever send – not only too.

We have been talking at Liverpool and Arsenal with an exciting way of playing where the midfield does not need to become super-creative, and England are a little short in this department. But while you’ve got players like Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford – Jadon Sancho effective at pushing at others in addition to them – that I think it is a fantastic way to go.
