Jamille Matt came from the bench and scored to make a victory over Port Vale to Newport.
The close-range target of matt means the Exiles are unbeaten in League 2 and two points behind leaders Exeter.
Vale may count themselves lucky to have 11 men later James Gibbons slid with a full-blooded challenge into Robbie Willmott heading in at half-time and survived some heavy first-half pressure.
Matt and Corey Whitely were released in the chair and combined to split the breakthrough out.
Before crossing the ball to score his first of the season, whitely surged down the perfect wing, leaving Adam Crookes in his wake.
Padraig Amond saw his penalty saved by Scott Brown, diving to his left although Vale captain Leon Legge then draged down in the box the Exiles striker.
Legge hit the bar with a header in additional time but Newport saw the game to keep their unbeaten start to the year out.
