Ireland’s Sam Bennett claimed his second point win on point 14 in Oviedo for this year’s Vuelta a Espana.
The rider sailed ahead of Max Richeze of Argentina with Tosh van der Sande .
The end has been ruled by a crash in the final kilometre that took out many from the peloton and prevented a mass rush.
Hurry leader Primoz Roglic of Slovenia endured in the wreck but did not lose any time.
The point that was 188km was likely to be a quieter day after two tough weeks in the saddle and mountain stages to return on Sunday and Monday.
It was gearing up for a bunch finish, but entering the last kilometre riders were sent tumbling on an incline.
Bennett was ahead of that, and enjoyed a victory than he could have imagined because he uttered Richeze along with Van der Sande in the last 500m.
This was his second La Vuelta stage success after winning point three years on 26 August, along with his fifth in a Grand Tour after three in the 2018 Giro d’Italia.
The 28-year-old is having an exceptional year with this his 13th achievement.
“I am just delighted,” Bennett told Eurosport. “I’ve reached my goal for the entire year, but hopefully there are just another one or 2 more wins .”
More to follow.
